Intravenous Sedation and General Anesthesia

For many patients, the thought of undergoing a surgical procedure in the mouth, jaws or on the face causes extreme anxiety. This anxiety may be so severe that it prevents the patient from receiving the necessary treatment. Sedation and general anesthesia are also recommended for children, to make their experience comfortable and pleasant. At West Valley Oral Surgery Group, we are accustomed to treating patients like this. Because of the advanced training of our doctors and staff, we are able to provide intravenous sedation and general anesthesia in order to make your surgery as comfortable and stress-free as possible. This includes not only the recovery period after surgery, but especially the time during the surgery. Most patients have such a pleasant experience that they have their surgery done and are not even aware that the procedure is completed.

In addition to your comfort, safety is our primary concern. During anesthesia in our office, our patients are monitored just as they would be in a hospital setting. Our surgeons have had extensive training and experience in the administration of anesthesia and sedation, and are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Our operating rooms are equipped with the same monitors and equipment used in the hospital for safe anesthesia. We follow the strict guidelines developed by the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. All members of our surgical team have completed the Anesthesia Assistants training course of the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and are certified in CPR. We use IV sedation and general anesthesia techniques that were developed to ensure safe and comfortable office-based procedures. The technique is very similar to what is used for endoscopy, colonoscopy, minor cosmetic procedures and biopsies.

If you wish to have intravenous sedation or general anesthesia for your procedure, it is customary to see you first for a consultation. During the consultation visit, the doctor will review your medical history and discuss the different anesthetic options with you. Only patients who are healthy or have minimal health risk receive sedation or general anesthesia in the office. The anesthetic options for your surgery will be discussed at the time of your consultation. The doctor will explain the differences between the types of anesthesia, and answer all of your questions and concerns. It is alright to eat before this first appointment, as your surgery will be scheduled after this consultation has been done.
